What is Karate?

Karate is a system of self-defence and physical culture that originally developed in Okinawa and later spread to Japan and all over the world.

Karate in its literal Japanese means Empty Hand. (KARA – Empty / TE – Hand).

Karate is one of the oldest and most effective means of self-defence.

It is an art of unarmed combat as well as an excellent system of achieving physical fitness and mental discipline. It consists of stretching, body conditioning, body movements, blocking, punching, striking, kicking, throwing and meditation.

For just good exercise, Karate ranks among the best because it utilizes all parts of the body and keeps them tone and flexible. Unlike other exercises that are often repetitive, Karate is always challenging, stimulating and especially purposeful. One of the greatest attributes of Karate is that anyone, irrespective of size, age and sex, can practice and appreciate the art according to his/her abilities.

In this respect, Karate training has a high educational value. Karate training has great potential to change a person physically, psychologically and emotionally in a very positive way.

Karate FAQs

1

Is karate violent?

Nothing can be further from the truth. The first principle of karate is “non-offence”, i.e. never to be the first to strike another. This principle is emphasised throughout all of karate’s forms, where the first move is always a block (denoting defence).

It is only in the movies where violent and brainless karate practitioners exist, and we all know that movies should never be believed.

2

Does karate teach board and brick breaking?

Board-breaking is another of those Hollywood fantasies. Such practices are not advocated to most people. Essentially, films have trivialised karate (and many other martial arts) by restricting its definition to breaking boards and bricks.

Karate is not a martial art that is for fighting, but for defense.
Karate teaches us to be disciplined, discerning, and diligent. It makes us stronger and calm, even in the face of difficulties. It also helps us cultivate our minds to become a better person. Karate makes us more confident and determined in life.
